Dolly Bonfy of Winfield was named the 2022 Open Class Exhibitor of the Year at the Cowley County Fair. The award is given in memory of longtime fair board member and grass and grain superintendent Larry G. Hittle who passed away in August 2018.
The award is based on overall participation in all of the open class departments at the fair. Dolly scored a total of 174 points for her exhibits in the foods, floral and grass and grain departments. She received a special plaque and a $25 check. Her basil exhibit was named “Best of Show” in the grass and grain department.
Bonfy is a city girl from Kansas City who moved to Arkansas City in 1985 to teach. Her exhibiting started after her marriage to Dick Bonfy 31 years ago. Her first competition was in the Cowley County Swine Classic open class. Through the years, Dolly’s many exhibits at the fair included a friendly competition with Janeanne Fry, mainly in the floral department.
Bonfy said since moving to town, she and Dick found a garden spot on land owned by Web Roth. Web prepares the ground and Dolly’s daughter and grandsons come and help with planting. Then it is up to her and husband Dick. This year alone she has canned 200 quarts of pickles, beets and salsa. Their home’s flower garden was also included in the annual Habitat Garden Tour.
Dolly is a member of the Winfield Gardenaires. Dick is former county commissioner and a fair board member. Together they served as organizers of the Walnut Valley Farmers Market for many years. During that time, the market moved from Memorial Park to the entrance and parking area at Island Park in Winfield. They were vendors at the farmers markets, both in Winfield and Arkansas City, for more than 20 years.
Dolly said they start planning their fair exhibits as soon as the fair premium guide is released. In the process of arranging floral exhibits, any extra flowers are taken to the main office at Cumbernauld and distributed to residents for all to enjoy.
She works to encourage others, especially her grandchildren, in their hobbies. Dolly reminds everyone to have fun doing it. If it is not fun, don’t do it. Sharing is being part of the community. Exhibiting at the fair is also being part of the community.
